Piece count is not a size. To know whether a jigsaw fits a table, board or frame, use the exact edition’s finished width and height, then account for the working clearance you need around every edge.
A 500-piece label or 1,000-piece label describes how many pieces are in the puzzle, not the size of the completed image. Brands and product lines use different piece sizes, cuts and aspect ratios. The same artwork may also be sold in multiple editions with different counts or dimensions.
Use the completed or finished dimensions printed for the exact edition you intend to buy. Box dimensions describe packaging, and a dimension copied from another count, region or production run may not apply. Matching a maker SKU, UPC or other edition identifier provides a stronger check than matching the title alone.
Dimensions vary by edition. Any size example in this guide illustrates how to measure; it is not a universal size for a particular piece count.
Measure the uninterrupted rectangle on which pieces can actually lie flat. This can be smaller than the advertised size of a table, board or case.
Measure inside raised edges, handles, hinges or rounded corners. For a shared table, exclude the portion that must stay free.
Convert either the surface or puzzle dimensions so both are in inches or both are in centimeters before comparing them.
This is the working strip between the puzzle and each side of the surface—not the total extra width or height.
A landscape puzzle may fit after a 90-degree turn even when its listed width exceeds the surface's width.
Let the surface be S wide by T high, the puzzle be P wide by Q high, and the requested clearance be C on every edge. The puzzle fits with that clearance when:
If rotation is allowed, test the same comparison again with P and Q swapped. A square puzzle is unchanged by a 90-degree rotation.
Example: a 30 × 24 inch usable surface with 1.5 inches of requested clearance per edge leaves a 27 × 21 inch clearance-safe rectangle. A puzzle listed as 27 × 20 inches fits that example in the matching orientation. A 28 × 20 inch puzzle still fits the bare surface, but not with the full 1.5-inch margin on both horizontal edges.

Retail and manufacturer listings may describe completed puzzles with dimensions such as 18 × 24 inches, 19¼ × 26⅝ inches, 20 × 27 inches or 24 × 30 inches. These are examples of published nominal sizes, not fixed dimensions assigned to a piece count.
A rounded inch measurement and a metric measurement may also describe approximately the same product. Small rounding differences usually matter less for an open table, but they can matter for a close-fitting board, storage case or frame. Preserve extra tolerance when the source measurement is rounded or uncertain.

Measure inside lips and closures. Check whether trays or covers reduce the flat working area or press on raised pieces.
Confirm the visible opening, backing and mounting method. Nominal frame size alone does not guarantee a precise fit.
The basic calculation treats the puzzle as a rectangular bounding box. That works directly for rectangular puzzles and is a useful first check for round, panoramic or shaped designs. It does not describe every contour of an irregular edge.
For a shaped puzzle, use the maximum finished width and height and add tolerance for protruding pieces or an uncertain measurement. For a panoramic puzzle, the long edge often determines fit. For a round puzzle, compare its published diameter with both usable surface dimensions.
Rotation solves only an orientation mismatch. It cannot make a rectangle fit if either puzzle dimension still exceeds the corresponding usable dimension after both orientations are checked.
